What Is Brain Cancer ?

Brain cancer is a malignancy that occurs in brain organs where a set of brain cells grows abnormally, out of control. Most brain cancers can spread through the brain tissue, but rarely spread to other areas of the body.

But in the case of benign brain tumors, as they grow, they can destroy and suppress other normal brain tissue, which can result in paralysis or fatality. Therefore, doctors prefer to use the term "brain tumor" rather than "brain cancer."
The main concern in patients with brain cancer and brain tumors is how quickly they spread through other parts of the brain / spinal cord and whether they can be removed and not recurred.

Brain and spinal cord cancer in adults is different from that in children. They often form in different areas, evolving from different cell types, and perhaps the treatment approach is also different. This discussion is devoted only to adult brain cancer.

To understand brain cancer, we need to understand how the central nervous system and the human brain work.

Anatomy of the Brain

The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is an important organ that controls the mind, memory, emotions, touch, motor skills, vision, respiration, temperature, hunger, and every process that governs our body.
The brain can be divided into the cerebrum , brainstem , and cerebellum :

Big Brain (cerebrum):

The cerebrum (supratentorial or forebrain) consists of the right and left cerebral hemispheres. The functions of the cerebrum include: movement initiation, movement coordination, temperature, touch, sight, hearing, judgment, reasoning, problem solving, emotion, and learning.

Brainstem (brainstem):

The brain stem (midline or center of the brain) includes the midbrain, pons, and medulla. The functions of this area include: movement of the eyes and mouth, delivery of sensory messages (heat, pain, hard, etc.), hunger, respiration, consciousness, heart function, body temperature, unconscious muscle movement, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, and swallowing.

Small brain (cerebellum):

The small brain (infratentorial or back brain) is located at the back of the head. Its function is to coordinate voluntary muscle movements and to maintain posture, balance, and equilibrium.
